Crisscrossing the ceiling of the huge warehouse were a number of catwalks, accessible via rickety metal stairs that lined the walls. I pushed my way around a couple of junkies, passed out at the bottom of the nearest set of stairs, and began to climb.

My shoes stuck to the grime-coated metal beneath me, and I did my best not to touch the railing as we headed up into the rafters. Some festive soul had strewn toilet paper from catwalk to catwalk, and the empty tubes littered the grating. The catwalks hummed with conversation and laughter, a popular perch for those who wished to escape the crush and heat of the party below.

We worked our way to the front of the catwalk, jockeying for position with a few other spectators. From here, we had a clear view of the chaos beneath. There had to be a hundred or more people spread across the warehouse floor, with the majority of the crowd clumped around the main arena. A few enterprising individuals had driven pickup trucks and vans in through the now-closed loading bay doors, and were selling various drugs and drinks off the backs of their vehicles. The crowd was a mix of styles and classes that only Seattle could offer. Scantily dressed prostitutes mingled with bespectacled tech types, who were swallowing pills bought off colorfully clad ravers and mohawked punks. Everyone was showing off their tattoos in the humid space. Flesh was, after all, the main entertainment of the night. I caught the sounds of a dozen different languages, the smell of heated heroin and smoky marijuana, but everything was underscored by the taste of blood on the air itself—thick and wet—like an uninvited tongue probing my mouth.

I tried to avoid looking down into the arena, but from our current vantage point, it was impossible. My eyes were drawn to the patches of drying rust brown that stained the concrete, so fresh the light still reflected off the pools of blood. I watched as two skinny men in wife-beaters dragged the dead pit bull from the middle of the ring, the crowd jeering and throwing pieces of trash at them as they worked. Numb, I watched as the torn skin around the open throat flapped and fluttered, slick sinews exposed to the open air as the men jerked the body forward. I wanted to look away, to not see, to not think about what it tasted like to rip out the windpipe of an animal, but I was frozen to the spot, my hands gripping the railing of the catwalk.

I wasn’t sure at first why Grace put her hand on top of my own. But the sensation of flesh pressing against mine brought me back to myself in time to feel the older werewolf step close behind me.

“There’s Dan,” she shouted into the shell of my ear. She pointed down into the crowd that surrounded the ring.
